What Should You Actually Pay a Video Editor in Calgary? Let's Talk Real Numbers

Here's a question I get more than any other, usually whispered like it's a bit rude to ask: "So... what would something like this cost?" Pricing in this industry is weirdly secretive. Nobody puts numbers on their website, and everyone gives you that maddening "well, it depends."

So let's not do that. Most editing in Calgary gets billed by the hour or by the project. Hourly, here's where the market actually sits in 2026: a junior runs $31 to $51 an hour, a mid-level editor $51 to $87, and a senior anywhere from $87 to $143. The median for a solid mid-level person is around $66. If you're hiring full-time instead, you're looking at $49,500 to $93,500 a year.

Now, before you grab the cheapest hourly rate, hear me out. A junior at $35 sounds lovely until you realise the edit that takes me four hours takes them twelve. Do the maths. The cheap editor just cost you more and the video isn't as good. Speed is a skill you pay for.

This is why I push most clients toward project pricing instead. You agree on a fixed number up front, and that's the number. No clock-watching, no surprise invoice. Rough Calgary ballparks: a simple social edit lands around $150 to $400, a polished brand video runs $800 to $2,500, a wedding film sits between $1,500 and $4,000.

What moves those numbers? How much footage you hand over, how finished you need it, how fast you want it, and how many rounds of changes you're going to ask for. A fair quote spells all of that out. A dodgy one stays vague and gets cagey when you ask what's included.

You don't need the most expensive editor in the city. You need the one whose work you like, whose price is clear, and who answers your emails like a human.

What will Kumar do?

If your head's spinning from all those numbers, here's the honest version. When someone comes to me, I don't start a meter and hope you don't notice. I look at your footage, I give you a flat project price, and that's the price. You know exactly what you're paying and exactly what you get back. I'm a video editor in Calgary and clear, fair pricing is basically the whole point of how I work. Send me what you've got and I'll give you a real number, today.
